Epstein's former attorney tells House panel he didn't know about the abuse

AP News WASHINGTON (AP) — Jeffrey Epstein's longtime personal attorney testified to a House committee Thursday that he was unaware of the late financier's sexual abuse of underage girls at the time it was happening, becoming the latest person connected to Epstein to take that stance.

Darren Indyke, who worked as Epstein's attorney for roughly two decades, told the House Oversight Committee in his opening statement that he “had had no knowledge whatsoever” of Epstein's abuse and would have quit working for him if he had known he was trafficking women and underage girls.

US stocks pare their losses as oil prices recede after briefly topping $119 per barrel

AP News NEW YORK (AP) — Stocks pared their losses on Wall Street as an early spike in crude oil prices eased later in the day. The roller-coaster ride for oil prices Thursday underscored how they’re dictating where financial markets and maybe even the economy are heading. The S&P 500 fell 0.3% after erasing an earlier drop of 1%. The Dow Jones Industrial Average lost 0.4%, and the Nasdaq composite fell 0.3%. AP News WASHINGTON (AP) — Two agents fired from the FBI last year said in a federal lawsuit Thursday that they were terminated “solely” because of their participation in an investigation into President Donald Trump's effort to overturn the results of the 2020 election.

The two agents, identified as John Doe 1 and John Doe 2 in the lawsuit, are part of a broader group of employees fired over the past year for their role in the election investigation known as Arctic Frost. Their lawsuit is the latest in a series of court challenges to a personnel purge under the leadership of FBI...

Treasury Department taking over some student loans as the Education Department gets dismantled

AP News WASHINGTON (AP) — The U.S. Education Department is handing off a portion of its student loan portfolio to the Treasury Department, a first step toward shedding management of all student loans as Trump administration officials dismantle the federal education agency.

Under an agreement announced Thursday, the Treasury Department will take over management of student loans whose borrowers are in default, meaning they are months behind on payments. Those loans add up to about $180 billion, or 11% of the government’s $1.7 trillion student loan portfolio.

The Treasury...
