Wildfires in Southern California torch dozens of homes and force thousands to evacuate
WRIGHTWOOD, Calif. (AP) — Three major wildfires in Southern California's mountains east of Los Angeles torched dozens of homes and forced thousands of people to evacuate, officials said Wednesday.At least a dozen people, mainly firefighters, were treated for injuries that were mostly heat-related, authorities said. It might feel like the presidential election is still a long way off. It’s not.Election Day on Nov. 5 is less than two months away, and major dates, events and political developments will make it fly by.
The first mail ballots of the general election were sent out Wednesday, the day after the first debate between Democratic presidential nominee Kamala Harris and Republican nominee Donald Trump. Early in-person voting will start as soon as Sept. 20 in some states.

(AP) — Three former Memphis police officers charged in the January 2023 beating death of Tyre Nichols stood by his body and laughed after they punched, kicked and struck him with a baton in an attack that a prosecutor says was punishment because he tried to run away.The former officers are standing trial accused of federal civil rights violations.
