Bloomberg expands his support of mayors globally to help save democracy. And improve trash pickup

AP News Michael R. Bloomberg has believed mayors have plenty to teach each other since he was mayor of New York City and supported the effort to share good municipal ideas through his nonprofit Bloomberg Philanthropies since he left office in 2013.

However, as more nations get bogged down in what the media entrepreneur and philanthropist calls “ideological battles and finger-pointing,” Bloomberg says mayors can do even more. He is expanding his support for them internationally, with the Bloomberg LSE European City Leadership Initiative, a collaboration with the London School of...

China's trade surplus tops $1 trillion as its exports surge while imports lag behind

AP News HONG KONG (AP) — China’s exports returned to growth in November after an unexpected contraction in October, pushing its trade surplus in dollar terms for 2025 past the $1 trillion mark for the first time, according to data released Monday.

Exports climbed 5.9% from a year earlier in November while imports rose just under 2%.

The customs data released on Monday also showed that shipments to the U.S. dropped nearly 29% year-on-year. But as trade with the U.S. weakens, China is diversifying its export markets throughout Southeast Asia, Africa, Europe and Latin...

The Supreme Court weighs Trump's bid to fire independent agency board members

AP News WASHINGTON (AP) — The Trump administration's push to expand control over independent federal agencies comes before a sympathetic Supreme Court that could overturn a 90-year-old decision limiting when presidents can fire board members.

Lawyers for the administration are defending President Donald Trump's decision to fire Federal Trade Commission member Rebecca Slaughter without cause and calling on the court to jettison the unanimous 1935 decision in Humphrey's Executor.

Arguments are taking place Monday.

The court's six conservative justices already have...

AP News CAIRO (AP) — The head of the World Health Organization said Monday that the death toll from drone strikes on a kindergarten and other sites in Sudan's Kordofan state last week is now at 114 people killed, including 63 children.

WHO said there were three separate drone strikes on Kagoli last Thursday. The first targeted the kindergarten and the subsequent strikes targeted paramedics as they were transporting the survivors and a hospital. The death toll was not immediately clear at the time, in part due to communications outages.

Dr. Tedros Ghebreyesus, the director of...

Trump says Netflix deal to buy Warner Bros. 'could be a problem' because of size of market share

AP News WASHINGTON (AP) — President Donald Trump said Sunday that a deal struck by Netflix to buy Warner Bros. Discovery “could be a problem” because of the size of the combined market share.

“There's no question about it,” Trump said, answering questions about the deal and various other topics as he walked the red carpet at the Kennedy Center Honors.

The Republican president said he will be involved in the decision about whether the federal government should approve the $72 billion deal. If approved by regulators, the merger would put two of the world’s biggest...
