Student fires at officers at Tennessee school, is killed

AP News A student opened fire on officers responding to a report of a possible gunman at a Tennessee high school Monday, and police shot back and killed him, authorities said. The shooting wounded an officer and comes as the community reels from off-campus gun violence that has left three other students dead this year.

Police found the student in a bathroom at Austin-East Magnet High School in Knoxville, a city about 180 miles (290 kilometers) east of Nashville, Tennessee Bureau of Investigation Director David B. Rausch said at a news conference. They ordered the student to come out, but...

Altered photos of Cambodian torture victims stir controversy

AP News PHNOM PENH, Cambodia (AP) ??" Cambodians on Monday continued to condemn an Irish photo restorer for altering photographs of victims of their country's 1970s genocide to show them smiling, saying his decision and that of an international media group to publish them showed horrible judgement.

Vice on Friday published an interview with Matt Loughrey, who had colorized photos taken of prisoners of the Khmer Rouge's notorious S-21 prison in Phnom Penh, where an estimated 17,000 people suspected of being enemies of the communist regime were jailed and tortured before being executed. New Mexico governor signs bill to legalize recreational pot

AP News SANTA FE, N.M. (AP) ??" New Mexico Gov. Michelle Lujan Grisham signed legislation Monday legalizing recreational marijuana use within months and kicking off sales next year, making it the seventh state since November to put an end to pot prohibition.

The governor, a Democrat, has supported marijuana reform as a way to create jobs and shore up state revenue.

On Monday, she also touched on concerns about the harm inflicted on racial and ethnic minorities by drug criminalization and tough policing, noting that the new law could free about 100 from prison and expunge...

Appointing an independent monitor is part of a settlement the union agreed to with federal prosecutors in December. He'll stay in place for six years unless both sides agree to a shorter term.

Barofsky leads the law firm Jenner & Block's monitorship practice. He monitored two units of Credit Suisse following multibillion-dollar settlements. He also was an assistant...

Attack on Iran's Natanz plant muddies US, Iran nuke talks

AP News WASHINGTON (AP) ??" The attack on Iran's Natanz nuclear facility is casting a major shadow over Tuesday's resumption of indirect talks between the U.S. and Iran over resurrection of the international accord limiting Iran's nuclear program.

Neither Iran nor the U.S. say the incident will crater the negotiations. But the attack and the destruction of a significant amount of Iran's uranium enrichment capability add uncertainty to the discussions in Vienna.

The attack gives both sides reason to harden their positions, yet each has incentives to keep the talks on track. Read More
