Oil prices keep spurting higher, but US stocks hold near their records

AP News NEW YORK (AP) — More jumps for oil prices sent tremors through the bond market, along with hints that some Federal Reserve officials don’t want to cut interest rates any time soon. But fat profit reports from Visa and other big companies helped the U.S. stock market remain resilient Wednesday. The S&P 500 edged down by less than 0.1%, a day after slipping from its latest all-time high. The Dow dropped 0.6%, while the Nasdaq composite inched up less than 0.1%. The price for a barrel of Brent crude jumped nearly 6%. Treasury yields climbed as traders erased nearly all bets for a cut to... Read More

Supreme Court mulls Trump administration push to end protections for migrants from Haiti and Syria

AP News WASHINGTON (AP) — The Supreme Court on Wednesday wrestled with the Trump administration’s push to end legal protections for migrants fleeing war and natural disaster, hearing arguments that offer the latest test of how the justices will assess the legality of the president's far-reaching crackdown.

Several conservative justices appeared to be leaning in favor of the Republican administration's argument that the law limits what courts can do with a program known as temporary protected status, or TPS. The outcome could come down to how Chief Justice John Roberts and Justice Amy...

Texas tornado leaves 5 injured, buildings collapsed and homes without roofs

AP News MINERAL WELLS, Texas (AP) — Officials confirmed Wednesday that a tornado tore through this small city in eastern Texas, sending five people to a hospital as it flattened buildings used for manufacturing and ripped the roofs off nearby homes.

Local officials said they feared the worst when they saw buildings collapsing as a powerful storm struck Tuesday in Mineral Wells, home to about 15,000 people west of Dallas.

“We are most grateful for no loss of life in this event yesterday,” Mayor Regan Johnson told a news conference Wednesday. "When you see the destruction...

New report details suspect's worsening behavior before 2 USF students' killings

AP News ORLANDO, Fla. (AP) — The behavior of a suspect in the murders of two University of South Florida students from Bangladesh worsened over time from marijuana use, family members told deputies after his arrest three years ago for punching his brother in the face and kicking his mother in the back.

Hisham Abugharbieh was delusional at the time, stating “I am son of Mary” and “I created my brother. I am his god." He was taken to jail under the Baker Act, a Florida law that allows for involuntary, emergency mental health observation for 72 hours, according to an incident report...

House Republicans push ahead on bill to extend divisive US spy powers

AP News WASHINGTON (AP) — The Republican-controlled House is moving forward with a three-year reauthorization of a divisive U.S. surveillance program ahead of its expiration on Friday, adding new oversight measures but stopping short of the warrant requirement that critics have demanded.

The bill still faces an uncertain path to passage, with a sign-off needed from the Senate and President Donald Trump. But Republican leaders cleared a major procedural hurdle for the first time Wednesday after weeks of struggle.

“Two-thirds of the president’s daily national security...
