Collar cams offer a bear's eye view into the lives of grizzlies on Alaska's desolate North Slope

AP News ANCHORAGE, Alaska (AP) — The life of one of the most remote grizzly bear populations in the world is being documented by the animals themselves, with collar cameras that provide a rare glimpse of how they survive on Alaska’s rugged and desolate North Slope.

Twelve of the 200 or so grizzlies that roam the frigid, treeless terrain near the Arctic Ocean have been outfitted with the cameras as part of a research project by Washington State University and the Alaska Department of Fish and Game.

The videos they record — many partially obscured by the undersides of...

Trump's failed bid to elevate an Arab American ally shows cracks in his political coalition

AP News WASHINGTON (AP) — When Donald Trump won his comeback campaign, he credited the mayor of a small Detroit suburb with helping him make inroads with Michigan's Arab American community. As a reward, Trump nominated Amer Ghalib to serve as U.S. ambassador to Kuwait.

But Ghalib is not on his way to the oil-rich nation in the Persian Gulf. Instead, he is still in Hamtramck, population 30,000, after his nomination stalled because of opposition from Trump's fellow Republicans.

It's not clear whether the White House will submit Ghalib's name again, and he said it does not...

What a swing House district in Colorado shows about Republicans' immigration fallout in the midterms

AP News GREELEY, Colo (AP) — Like many Donald Trump voters, Miranda Niedermeier is not opposed to immigration enforcement. She was heartened by initial moves from the Republican president in his second term that she saw as targeting immigrants who were in the United States illegally and had committed crimes.

But Niedermeier, 35, has steadily become disillusioned with Trump. Never more so than in recent weeks, when federal immigration officers killed two U.S. citizens during Trump'scrackdownin Minneapolis.

“In the beginning, they were getting criminals, but now they're...

The ranks of US rabbis grow more diverse, with rising numbers of women and LGBTQ people

AP News Rabbi Laura Geller recalls how of the 30 people in her class at Hebrew Union College, she was the only woman.

Ordained in 1976, she would go on to become one of the first women rabbis in the Jewish Reform Movement. Fifty years later, she's proud to have helped break that glass ceiling and pave the way for change.

Rabbis and rabbinical students in the United States are more diverse than ever today, with increasing numbers of women and LGBTQ+ people. Women from earlier generations who became rabbis marvel at the greater opportunities available for those pursuing clergy...
