Gulf carriers resume some flights even as US-Israel strikes and Iran retaliation fuel travel chaos

AP News LONDON (AP) — Global air travel chaos intensified on Monday as the U.S. and Israel continued to bombard Iran, which struck back at targets across the Middle East, leaving airports closed and stranding travelers including those in faraway areas who were scheduled to transit through the region.

Governments were scrambling to help their citizens get home after the conflict erupted on Saturday, throwing travel plans into turmoil.

Tourists, business travelers and religious pilgrims found themselves stuck unexpectedly in hotels, airports and on cruise ships, with no word on...

Europe defends military bases and struggles to evacuate citizens as it is drawn into the war on Iran

AP News BRUSSELS (AP) — The U.S.-Israeli war on Iran and Tehran’s retaliatory strikes across the Middle East are quickly dragging Europe in, forcing the continent into defensive action to protect military bases and evacuate citizens caught up in the conflict.

The Middle East is home to some of Europe's key trading partners, and a number of strategic trading routes. Many Europeans live in cities such as Beirut, Dubai or Jerusalem, while large communities from countries including Turkey, Egypt and the Gulf states have settled across Europe. Europeans weren’t consulted on this...

Energy prices surge as tanker disruptions, facility shutdowns, rattle global supply

AP News FRANKFURT, Germany (AP) — Oil prices rose sharply Monday as disruptions to tanker traffic through the Strait of Hormuz chokepoint raised uncertainty about how U.S. and Israeli attacks on Iran would affect supply to the world economy.

U.S. oil traded 7.6% higher at $72.12 per barrel, while international standard Brent was up 8.6% at $79.11 per barrel. Natural gas futures in Europe jumped more than 40% after Qatar, a major supplier, halted production due to the conflict.

Higher oil prices raise the prospect of costlier gasoline for U.S. drivers as well as increased...

Stocks slump and oil prices leap as war in the Middle East raises worries about high inflation

AP News NEW YORK (AP) — Oil prices climbed, and stock markets slumped Monday as investors and households got the first chance to see what the war in the Middle East could mean for their finances.

Crude prices jumped more than 6%, which will likely translate into higher prices at gasoline pumps, because of fears that a widening war could slow the global flow of oil. More expensive fuel will also hit many U.S. companies, and sinking stocks for airlines, cruise lines and others helped drag the U.S. stock market lower.

The S&P 500 fell 0.8%. The Dow Jones Industrial Average was...

Iran's World Cup place in U.S. put in doubt by Middle East conflict. FIFA has Iraq next in line

AP News GENEVA (AP) — Iran’s place at the men’s World Cup in three months’ time was put in doubt Monday amid an escalating Middle East conflict sparked by the soccer tournament's co-host the United States.

Iran is due to play its three group-stage games in the U.S. — two in Inglewood, California, then in Seattle — from June 15-26. Cities in Canada and Mexico also will host some of the 104 games.

The U.S. and Israel have targeted Iran in coordinated attacks since Saturday that killed Supreme Leader Ayatollah Ali Khamenei and dozens more senior officials.
