AUGUSTA, Ga. (AP) — Justin Rose remained atop a star-studded leaderboard after the second round of the Masters on Friday, with defending champion Scottie Scheffler, Rory McIlroy and Bryson DeChambeau all within three shots of the lead.
Rose followed his opening 65 with a 1-under 71 that left him 8 under for the tournament. He was one ahead of DeChambeau, the reigning U.S. Open champion, whose rounds of 69-68 have him firmly in the mix for his first green jacket.
Speaking of first green jackets, McIlroy is in good shape to finally get his own. He had the low round of the day, a 6-under 66 to get to 6 under for the tournament. McIlroy needs only the Masters to complete the career grand slam.
Corey Conners also was at 6 under, and Scheffler was in a group another shot back that included Shane Lowry, Matt McCarty and Tyrrell Hatton. Scheffler dropped a shot at the par-4 finishing hole, which played the toughest on the course Friday.
When is the Masters?
The third round begins at 9:50 a.m. EDT on Saturday with Tom Kim going off with a marker. Rose and DeChambeau go off in the final group at 2:40 p.m., just after McIlroy and Conners.
How can I watch the Masters?
The Masters stream on its website resumes at 10:15 a.m. EDT on Saturday with cameras highlighting holes and featured groups. Third-round television coverage begins at noon on Paramount+ and 2 p.m. on CBS.
What are the betting odds for the Masters?
McIlroy is the favorite after the second round at 7-2, according to BetMGM Sportsbook. DeChambeau was the 18-5 second choice and Scheffler was the 4-1 third choice. Rose had 17-2 odds that he could remain on top all weekend.
What else happened Friday at Augusta National?
The biggest names in golf charged up the leaderboard on a warm, sunny day at Augusta National, where overnight rain made the course ripe for scoring for those that went off early but difficult as it dried out for those finishing late in the day.
It also was cut day, and some big names failed to make the weekend. Brooks Koepka made quadruple bogey at 18 and finished at 5 over, missing it by three shots. Mike Weir, Sergio Garcia and Phil Mickelson were among former champs who missed the cut.
Bernhard Langer and Fred Couples went to 18 with a chance to make it to the weekend. But the 67-year-old Langer, playing in his 41st and final Masters, missed the par putt that would have gotten him through, and the 65-year-old Couples made bogey when he needed birdie and missed the cut by two.
What is the weat
her forecast?
There was overnight rain ahead of Friday's second round, softening the course a bit. But the forecast calls for sunshine over the weekend, and Augusta National could play much more difficult for the final two rounds.
What happened last year at the Masters?
Scheffler shot a 4-under 68 on Sunday, keeping preternatural poise while his closest competitors faltered around Amen Corner, and finished with a four-shot victory over Masters newcomer Ludvig Aberg for his second green jacket in three years.
Aberg was among four players who had a share of the lead on Sunday; he lost ground when his approach went into the pond left of the 11th hole and he made double bogey. Collin Morikawa had two double bogeys to fall out of the hunt, tying for third with Tommy Fleetwood and Max Homa, whose own double bogey from the bushes at the par-3 12th ruined his chances.
Tiger Woods closed with a 77 and finished at 16-over 304, the highest 72-hole score of his career.
